The 4th of July is a day we hold close to our hearts, a time to come together as a family and celebrate the spirit of America. Over the years, my parents, brothers and sister as well as my aunt, uncle and cousins would gather to celebrate. There is just something about a family coming together that creates memories that will last a lifetime. This year, my family and I had the pleasure of gathering at our home on Crooked Creek. Oldest son and our sweet daughter in law and our 6 week old grandson, middle daughter and strong husband and youngest son all were able to come. We experienced a day filled with love, relaxation, laughter , barbecuing and a sense of appreciation for our freedom.
The day was the first chance as a family to wet our hooks and see what we could catch in the pond closest to the house. We have lived here a couple of years but life has prevented the family fishing day earlier. By the way, we moved here from a place where my husband had lived all of his life. While we loved that place and raised our children there, over the years houses and a noisy highway had surrounded it. The peace of rural life no longer lingered there.
I admit that I really like to fish. But it is a hobby that I haven’t had the opportunity to do for a very long time. All but baby grandson and his mommy tried their hand at catching something. Several of us caught the younger fish. But I did it! I pulled in the big daddy! 25” inches and 7 pounds. A large mouth bass! Never had I caught anything like that. And middle daughter and strong son-in-law fish all the time and had never seen one that big in person. Everybody was pretty excited. Very quickly bait hit the water looking for the bigger ones still out there. I guess we will save that fish for another day.
For me, the 4th of July has always been a reminder of the significance of family. It is a time to appreciate the loved ones we have in our lives and cherish the moments we spend together. As we sat along the creek, surrounded by laughter and stories, it was evident that the true treasure lies not in material possessions but in the connections we share with our kin.
It was a day I will remember forever here on Crooked Creek.
